Rhinitis

What is non-allergic rhinitis?

Non-allergic rhinitis includes chronic sneezing and nasal congestion with no apparent cause. The symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis are similar to those of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) without the usual signs of an allergic reaction.

Non-allergic rhinitis can affect children and adults, although it is more common after the age of 20. The triggers of non-allergic rhinitis symptoms vary and may include certain air odors and irritants, changes in weather, certain medications, foods or chronic conditions.

The diagnosis of nonallergic rhinitis is confirmed after an allergic cause is ruled out. This may require blood tests or skin tests for allergies.

Nutritional recommendations and general healthy habits for the maintenance of a good state of health

  • Do not open the windows at night. This will prevent pollen from entering the house. Remember to ventilate well, especially when dust is cleaned.
  • Minimize your activity as much as possible in the morning because pollen is usually emitted between 5 and 10 o’clock.
  • Keep the car windows closed when traveling.
  • Try to be indoors when the pollen count is high.
  • Take your vacation during the peak period of the pollen season. If possible, choose coastal areas, because they have lower pollen rates.
  • Do not cut the grass or approach freshly cut fields. This activity shakes the pollen.
  • If possible, do not hang sheets or clothing outdoors. Pollen can accumulate in them.
  • Limit contact, intake or respiration of allergens to the maximum.
  • Avoid excessive hygiene and contact with toxins that have been linked to a higher prevalence of allergies (alter the protective barrier of the skin and pH).
  • Prioritizes the use of healthy soaps and hygiene methods and respectful with the skin barrier.
