Vitamin C: what it does and where to find it

Vitamina C: biopotenciador de los hongos medicinales

Marta Hifas da Terra |

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the best-known vitamins. Our bodies cannot make it, so we need to obtain it from food or supplements every day.

What vitamin C does

Vitamin C contributes to:

  • the normal function of the immune system;
  • maintaining the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise;
  • normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth;
  • normal energy-yielding metabolism;
  • the normal functioning of the nervous system;
  • normal psychological function;
  • the protection of cells from oxidative stress;
  • the reduction of tiredness and fatigue;
  • increasing iron absorption.

Where to find it

Citrus fruits, kiwi and berries are well-known sources.

A little history

People suspected as early as the 18th century that citrus fruits prevented scurvy. In 1927–28, Hungarian scientist Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated 'hexuronic acid' – later identified as vitamin C – and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937.

Vitamin C in our mushroom extracts

Many of our pure mushroom extracts, such as Mico-Rei, Mico-Leo and Mico-Five, are combined with natural vitamin C from acerola cherry, which works in synergy with the mushrooms and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
